Texas Instruments To Buy 2 Former Spansion Fabs In Japan

Texas Instruments (TXN) late yesterday announced that it will buy two wafers fabs and related manufacturing equipment in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Japan. The assets have been owned by a unit of Spansion (CODE), which has gone through a Chapter 11 reorganization.

The company said the deal includes a 200mm wafer fab now in operation that can boost its analog revenue by more than $1 billion a year, and a second non-operating fab of equal size, which will be preserved for future capacity expansion. Almost all current workers at the site will be retained.

Texas Instruments says the deal includes some 300 mm production tools which will be moved to Richardson, Texas, to help complete the company’s new analog wafer fab there. A portion of the tools being acquires will be re-sold.

The company did not say what it is paying for the assets.
