FCC Approves Verizon-Frontier Deal

Late this afternoon, the Federal Communications Commission provided the final regulatory sign-off on Frontier Communications’ (FTR) acquisition of local wireline operations from Verizon (VZ), a deal originally announced in May of last year.

The deal covers 4.8 million lines in 14 states and was valued at $8.6 billion in stock when it was announced.

In a statement, the FCC said the transaction “will help advance the goals of the National Broadband Plan by bringing broadband to millions of consumers, small businesses, and anchor institutions in 14 states across the West, Midwest, and South.”

The companies said they planned to close the deal on July 1.
