Top Internet Companies For 2015

SAN FRANCISCO The U.S. Department of Homeland security is advising Americans not to use the Internet Explorer Web browser until a fix is found for a serious security flaw that came to light over the weekend.

The bug was announced on Saturday by FireEye Research Labs, an Internet security software company based in Milpitas, Calif.

"We are currently unaware of a practical solution to this problem," the Department of Homeland Security's United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team said in a post Monday morning.

It recommended that users and administrators "consider employing an alternative Web browser until an official update is available."

The security flaw allows malicious hackers to get around security protections in the Windows operating system. They then can be infected when visiting a compromised website.

Facebook wait to join the S&P 500 was roughly in line with Google Inc.(GOOG), which joined less than two years after its August 2004 IPO. Others waited longer. Amazon.com Inc.(AMZN), eBay Inc.(EBAY) and Yahoo Inc.(YHOO) each took over three years to join the S&P 500.

eBay (EBAY) is in play—if the 5.09% jump in the shares in afterhours yesterday, January 22, is to be believed. After the close of trading in New York yesterday, the stock climbed $2.77 a share to $57.18, from a session close of $54.41. (eBay is a member of my Jubak's Picks 12-18 month portfolio.)

EBay Inc. (EBAY) ended the day down by 8 cents a share at $53.64 a day ahead of the company first-quarter earnings report.

eBay's (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) global brand value jumped 40%, to roughly $18 billion. It's specifically aiming at global domination, with a forecast of enabling $300 billion in global commerce by 2015. It's spreading internationally in large part by acquisition, and is increasing its emerging-markets staffing by 50% this year. For several years now, it has been raking in more internationally than domestically. The stock's forward P/E of 17 is a bit ahead of its five-year average of 16. You might prefer that your stock picks have lower P/E numbers, but eBay's strong growth record and prospects make it a compelling long-term proposition. Many consider eBay's PayPal business to be its crown jewel, but while it poses a threat to the likes of Visa, it's vulnerable to threats, too.

The suggested changes weren't popular in some circles, but Netflix surged ahead and found an early partner for its new technology. It's not Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Chrome -- that browser still requires a special plugin to make use of the new video streams. And it's not open-source champion Mozilla Firefox, where developers hate the very idea of building copy-protection functions into the browser.

The extensive user base that Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) has established over the years has the potential to create at least three new sources of revenue for the technology leader. First, as Apple develops its near-field communication capabilities, mobile payments may become more viable. Second, with the release of iTunes Radio, Apple may be able to compete with Pandora (NYSE: P  ) and garner more users. Finally, if Apple is able to successfully introduce new advertising capabilities, it may be able to push into Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) turf in mobile ads.

Richard Drew/AP SAN FRANCISCO -- Retired schoolteacher Donald Hovasse signed up for Twitter about a year ago at the urging of his daughter. He lost interest after trying the service a few times and finding lots of celebrities but few of his friends using the online social network. "I didn't really get the point of it at all," said the Las Vegas resident. "Most of them were people I wasn't interested in hearing what they had to say anyway." He said, however, that he does check Facebook everyday to see what his friends are up to. Hovasse's experience highlights a risk for investors as Twitter marches towards this year's most anticipated initial public offering in the United States, expected to begin trading on the New York Stock Exchange in mid-November. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, 36 percent of 1,067 people who have joined Twitter say they don't use it, and 7 percent say they have shut their account. The online survey, conducted Oct. 11-18, has a credibility interval, a measure of its accuracy, of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points. In comparison, only 7 percent of 2,449 Facebook members report not using the online social network, and 5 percent say they have shut down their account. The results have a credibility interval of 2.3 percent. People who have given up on Twitter cite a variety of reasons, from lack of friends on the service to difficulty understanding how to use it. Twitter declined to comment for this story, saying it is in a quiet period ahead of its IPO. Twitter's attrition rate highlights a challenge that has dogged the online messaging site over the years: while it has managed to enlist many high-profile and avid users, from the pope to President Barack Obama, Twitter has yet to go truly mainstream in the way Facebook (FB) has. Convincing ordinary people to think of Twitter as an indispensable part of their lives is key to the company's ability to attract advertisers and generate a profit. Twitter reported it had 232 million "a
