Hot Gas Utility Stocks For 2014

With up to half the nation facing subzero cold and some areas facing the chilliest temperatures in nearly two decades, utility companies are bracing for fallout, adding extra energy-generating capacity and repair crews, urging customers to limit power use and warning others that they're likely to see higher heating bills.

Demand for natural gas prompted Xcel Energy to ask 850 businesses in Minnesota and North Dakota to reduce their reliance on the utility and switch to propane tank supplies so the utility can meet higher demand from other customers. Natural gas use has surged nearly 50% over year-ago levels, says spokeswoman Patti Nystuen. Montana-Dakota Utilities, which services 130,000 customers in four states, was experiencing similar increases.

Dominion Power, whose service areas include Virginia and the Carolinas, has readied 11 seldom-used power generators to handle increased demand. They usually run less than 25% of the year and are used to supplement energy needs in the hottest and coldest periods, says spokesman Dan Genest.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap solar stock Andalay Solar Inc (OTCMKTS: WEST) has largely cratered for investorsverses solar stock peers Real Goods Solar, Inc (NASDAQ: RSOL) and SolarCity Corp (NASDAQ: SCTY), but is the company finally turning itself around after a failed deal to be acquired?

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's fun to be right, but that doesn't always mean it's fruitful. I was right about Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) being a breakout candidate when I explained the chart's most likely technical outcome. Though it took a little more than a week for WEST to actually perform as expected, it got there. Problem: It got there in spades, solving one problem but creating another. Though I'm still bullish on this solar play, we need a new roadmap.

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

My enthusiasm regarding Real Goods Solar, Inc. (NASDAQ:RSOL) and Westinghouse Solar Inc. (OTCMKTS:WEST) hasn't exactly been a veiled secret. Though I've favored one over the other at various times since the entire solar panel industry went back into high gear in the middle of the second quarter, I've been a fan of both RSOL as well as WEST for a while. The trick has been finding the right entry spot for both of these volatile stocks.

In Company-operated restaurants, it assumes the capital expenditures for the building and equipment of the restaurant and, if it owns the real estate location, for the land as well. Under its franchise arrangements, franchisees provide a portion of the capital required by initially investing in the equipment, signs, seating and decor of their restaurants, and by reinvesting in the business over time. It is required by the MFAs to own the real estate or to secure long-term leases for franchised restaurant sites. It subsequently leases or subleases the property to franchisees.

In exchange for the lease and services, franchisees pay a monthly rent to the Company, based on the greater of a fixed rent or a certain percentage of gross sales. In addition to this monthly rent, it collects the monthly continuing franchise fee, which generally is 5% of the United States dollar equivalent of the restaurant gross sales, and pays these fees to McDonald pursuant to the MFAs. However, if a franchisee fails to pay its monthly continuing franchise fee, it remains liable for payment in full of these fees to McDonald. Arcos Dorados (ARCO) operates and franchises McDonald's restaurants in Latin America. This stock closed up 7.7% to $13.33 in Wednesday's trading session.

    Wednesday's Volume: 3.81 million

    Three-Month Average Volume: 856,761

    Volume % Change: 333%

From a technical perspective, ARCO soared higher here back above both its 50-day moving average at $12.31 and its 200-day moving average at $12.86 with heavy upside volume. This move has now taken shares of ARCO out of its downtrend and the stock closed strong near the highs of the day. Shares of ARCO are now moving within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ARCO manages to take out its intraday high of $13.42 and then once it clears more resistance at $14.35 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ARCO as long as it's trending above its 200-day at $12.86 or its 50-day at $12.31 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 856,761 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ARCO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $15.52 to its 52-week high at $16. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ARCO a chance to tag $18 to $19.

Advisors' Opinion:

Audi had about 29% of the Chinese luxury-car market last year. Together with German archrivals BMW (NASDAQOTH: BAMXF  ) and Mercedes-Benz (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) , German brands account for about three-quarters of China's luxury-vehicle sales.

    Won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?
One of the world's most iconic luxury vehicle nameplates was formed on June 28, 1926, when Benz & Cie and Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft finally merged after a two-year corporate partnership to create Daimler-Benz AG (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) . The Benz name, despite a stronger automotive pedigree (Karl Benz did invent the modern automobile, after all), wound up secondary to Daimler's Mercedes brand. Daimler's three-pointed star logo also wound up on the new company's cars, further cementing its primacy in the ostensible merger of equals.

Luxury car sales represent just a small portion of overall car sales, but they generate big profits for their makers. So far in 2013, German giant Daimler's (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) Mercedes-Benz brand leads the U.S. luxury-car market. But key rivals have been gaining ground, and the battle for this lucrative market is growing fierce.

The export boost will help out some of Germany's biggest corporations and stocks, however. German automakers have taken a beating in the recession, and May didn't help: New-car sales in the country fell by nearly 10% for the month after notching a rare gain in April. Both BMW (NASDAQOTH: BAMXY  ) and Daimler (NASDAQOTH: DDAIF  ) have performed better than many carmakers in Germany this year, but both saw sales flatten over the early part of the year. Daimler's stock has performed well in the year so far, but to avoid any fall, the company -- along with BMW -- announced that it will not participate in the traditional summer break during which German automakers close their factories for a few weeks. Right now, neither company can afford that.
