Firefighters in Russia are dealing with almost 600 fires, the largest number of fires the country has seen in nearly 40 years. Help arrived form Italy and five former Soviet republics in the form of aircraft, fire trucks and personnel.

Three Italian jets arrived in Moscow late Thursday afternoon, will fight fires in the Moscow region. Two Azeri jets were assigned to the Lipetsk region and two helicopters of Kazakh will help the firefighters in Samara regions. Two firefighting units from Ukraine joined with two jets in the Voronezh region. Belarus sent 150 firefighters and a helicopter to the Ryazan and Vladimir region and promised 20 fire fighting vehicles. Two American jets with four water pumps were also sent to the Nizhny region.

Germany, Poland, and Bulgaria have offered their assistance and Finnish firefighters are standing by as the fires burn towards their country’s border. According to the associated press the Russian military garrison southwest of Moscow moved all its artillery rockets to a safer location because of the fires. A Spokesman for the Defense Ministry said that the garrison was not in any immediate danger.

The Russian media reported as many as 200 planes may have been destroyed; nearly 2,000 homes have been destroyed. Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has promised to rebuild them, before winter and also promised that each victim will receive $6,600.

The forecast for the region shows that the little change in temperature, may have been responsible for the fires, this is the hottest summer on record, according to Reuters.

Thick smog has been blanketing Moscow because of all fires and temperatures reaching up to 100 degree where the normal temperature is usually around the 75 degrees.
