Market Showing Some Strength; Chesapeake Jumps on Shale Results

Stocks were up modestly in pre-market trading after the government reported that core capital goods orders rose 1.1% in August, although overall durable goods fell 0.1%. European stocks were slightly lower after swinging for much of the session between small gains and small losses. It’s unclear whether recent optimism about the prospects for a rebound in the Euro Zone will hold.

Dow futures rose 24 points to 11,144. S&P 500 futures rose 1.9 points to 1,171.4.

Chesapeake Energy (CHK) said it had strong initial results from a series of discovery wells it had drilled in the Utica Shale in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Its shares rose 4.8%.
