HTC Unveils Win Phones with Familiar Nokia Look

HTC's new Windows Phone 8X phone...

While on vacation, I stopped in this afternoon at an event hosted on Manhattan's west side by HTC (2498TW) to unveil two new phones running Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows Phone 8, the next release of the company's mobile operating system, expected out this fall. (Microsoft's general release date for Windows 8, which includes desktop and tablet releases as well, is October 26th.)

Calling them “the heroes that Windows Phone has been waiting for,” HTC showed off the “8X” and the “8S,” a 4.3-inch and a 4-inch, unit, screen wise, respectively. Both phone borrow a page, perhaps rather brazenly, from Windows Phone 8 devices unveiled two weeks ago in New York by Microsoft partner Nokia (NOK), under the latter's “Lumia” brand. Like the Lumias, the 8X and 8S have brightly-colored frames made of polycarbonate. Rather than being bricks slightly curved at the sides, like the Lumias, the 8X and 8S have curved backs and tapered edges.

HTC president Jason Mackenzie said the two will be “the signature devices for Windows Phone 8,” and that the company has been working more and more closely with Microsoft to bring them to fruition a statement that must have ruffled Nokia a bit.

...Looks a bit like Nokia's Lumia Windows phones

The larger device, the 8X, features a 1280 by 720 pixel display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a 1.5-gigahertz “Snapdragon” processor from Qualcomm (QCOM). HTC made much of the fact that the front-facing camera, which is often short-changed in phones, is a 2.1 megapixel type, capable of shooting full HD video. The smaller 8S has no front-facing camera and contains a 5 megapixel rear camera and a slower 1-gigahertz Snapdragon chip.

The phones are to be made available in November, but no prices were announced.
