Intel (INTC) this morning officially unveiled a new line of Atom-based processors, which were formerly code-named Moorestown. The company said the new processors have significantly lower power consumption than previous offerings, and will “target a range of computing devices, including high-end smartphones, tablets and other mobile handheld products.” The company faces competition in that market from the Qualcomm (QCOM) Snapdragon line and from various chips based on designs from ARM Holdings (ARMH).
Barclays Capital analyst Tim Luke writes in a research note that Intel might not get much traction in the sector until it moves from the 45 nm-based Moorestown line to the coming 32 nm-based Medfield chips.
Luke also noted that Intel is likely to have more to say about its strategy for mobile devices at its analyst day next Tuesday.
INTC today is down 34 cents, or 1.5%, to $22.06.
