In case you missed it, research firm IDC this afternoon issued its latest outlook on the tablet computer market, which has Google‘s (GOOG) Android operating system reaching nearly 49% of tablet computer shipments by platform this year, up from 41.5%, while Apple‘s (AAPL) iOS, which drives the iPad, is expected to drop from 51% of the market last year to 46% this year.
The analysts see Android at 46% in 2017 and Apple at 43%. Microsoft‘s (MSFT) Windows 8 may have the biggest room for growth, on a proportionate basis, rising from 1% last year to 7.4% come 2017, but the analysts think Microsoft needs to reconsider their strategy around the Surface tablet computer the company has designed and is selling:
IDC expects Windows RT growth to remain below 3% during the forecast period. Microsoft’s decision to push two different tablet operating systems, Windows 8 and Windows RT, has yielded poor results in the market so far. Consumers aren’t buying Windows RT’s value proposition, and long term we think Microsoft and its partners would be better served by focusing their attention on improving Windows 8. Such a focus could drive better share growth in the tablet category down the road.
